Make Ojo Part of Your Holiday Survival Kit
How To Find Stress Relief During the Holidays

(Source: eHow.com)

Too much comes at you during the holidays. Your body reacts by switching into high gear and increasing your heart rate and adrenaline to meet the increased demands. This is stress. Left untreated, stress assaults emotional healthas well, leaving you exhausted and unable to function. Managing stress means getting your body systems back in balance by following these stress relief techniques.

1. Breathe deeply and with awareness. When you feel stress, you take frequent shallow breaths, limiting oxygen and causing more stress. When muscles tense up, find relief with a few minutes of deep breathing techniques. Breathe in slowly through your nose, and then release the breath through your mouth.

2. Imagine a scene that brings you peace. One form of meditation, guided imagery, uses the imagination to focus on a peaceful setting. By doing so, tension melts away. If you're too busy to sit, try a walking meditation by concentrating on each step you take while breathing deeply.

3. Sweating helps to release tension.Soaking in a hot bath or in Ojo's healing mineral waters is a wonderful way to relax the body and mind, increase blood circulation to encourage detox.

4. Gain feel-good endorphins with exercise.Look into gentle mind-body exercises like yoga or Tai Chi. Yoga balances the body systems with a series of postures and breathing techniques. Tai Chi employs a series of body movements that calm the mind.

5. Soothe your mind by listening to relaxing music. After the clutter of holiday music, your ears appreciate relaxing music like classical or new age. Alternatively, find relief by listening to nature sounds like the waves of an ocean.

6. Smell scents to calm you.Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to release a physical response. Lavender oil often keeps stress hormones at bay.

7. Rub the tension out with massage.Stress often makes itself known through muscle tension. When massage vanquishes tension, stress vanishes. Acupressure works the same way, but concentrates on pressure points in the body.

8. Manage your time.Everyone possesses the same amount of time, but when you feel stress, it's often because you think you don't have enough time. Look at your schedule and prioritize what you want to accomplish that day. Give high priority items an "A" and concentrate on them. If you still have time, move to important "B" items that are not a high priority.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid excessive caffeine and sugar. Too much of either eventually sends you crashing and feeling worse than before.

Enjoy a stress-free holiday season!

Reflexology: Full-body relaxation through your feet

A great stress reliever, mood enhancer, and pain controller, reflexology has become a favorite treatment amongst our guests at Ojo. Read on to find out why it is also our most surprising treatment.

Reflexology is a type of massage based on ancient practices designed to improve energy flow throughout the body. During reflexology treatments, our skilled therapists work on reflex points on the feet that relate to specific organs and glands in the body. Stimulating those points with finger pressure promotes health by increasing the flow of energy to the corresponding body part to promote healing. Reflexology has been used to relieve many ailments including headaches, arthritis, insomnia, back pain and other internal issues. It is also a good treatment option for people who want to keep their clothes on during a massage, as during the treatment only your feet will be exposed.

Though attention is focused primarily on the feet, our guests are pleasantly surprised by the soothing tranquil effect they feel throughout their entire body. Following treatment, our guests report an overall feeling of wellness and a restoration of balance, as well as a reduction of pain and stress. Reflexology is so regenerative that it’s been said that one hour of reflexology is equal to 8 hours of sleep for your body. If you have never tried reflexology before, you might be surprised as to how much your body can respond to this amazing treatment.

Reflexology Foot Therapy is available as a 50-minute stand-alone including ear reflexology and a balancing neck massage. 25-minute treatments are available as a stand-alone or as an add-on to other spa treatments.

REFLEXOLOGY FOOT THERAPY
Treat yourself to a reflexology foot session that stimulates and balances your entire system by applying pressure on specific reflex points on your feet. Our guests tell us this is the one treatment they are most pleasantly surprised by. Not offered for pregnant women.
50-minute stand-alone … $79
(Includes ear reflexology and balancing neck massage)

Basic Use of Herbs for Preventative Care while traveling

Exposure to recycled air in airplanes can be the cause of many unwanted health ailments. According to herbalists, one way to protect yourself is to use anti-viral herbs in the form of essential oils, such as Eucalyptus, Desert Sage and Thyme. These can breathed in via an inhaler or by putting small drops on a cotton ball. These oils have been known to help clear respiratory passages and protect the lungs from infection.

While taking extra Vitamin C usually provides a boost to the immune system, many holistic practitioners recommend additional support with Osha Root. Osha is a powerful high desert plant that has been used medicinally by indigenous cultures for thousands of years. Native Americans call it “bear root” or “bear medicine.” Osha Root comes in a number of different forms, including a version that is candied in honey, as well as the traditional liquid extract in tincture form. Though a bit more potent, chewing on the root itself is another easy travel option. Osha has also been know to increase protection for the lungs against viruses.

Upon arrival in new locations, our bodies are exposed to new sets of viruses and germs. To protect the digestive system from these viruses and potential stomach problems, herbalists also recommend trying Chaparro Amargosa, which is an anti-parasitic/anti-microbial plant found in the Southwest. It has been used as an active inhibitor of intestinal bacteria for centuries and can be taken as a liquid tincture with juice or tea to diminish the taste.

Herbal sprays to protect against insects such as mosquitos and bed bugs can be extremely helpful. The most recommended plants for this use are Port Orford Cedar Oil, Desert Sage and Geranium.

Tea Tree Oil, Thyme Oil and Aloe Vera Gel can all be used as natural hand sanitizers.

Adding a few simple herbal supplements to your travel kit have the potential to support and maintain good physical health wherever your destination may take you.

Spring Back to Life: Get a Massage

Courtesy of ISPA. Written by: Jeanie Ward

"Spring has sprung!" The flowers and trees are displaying the early arrival of this magnificent and exciting time of year, when nature reminds us of the beauty that is always around us, and within us, even when we aren't aware of it.

Winter can be a challenging time for many people, with shorter days and less sunlight, and a tendency to withdraw from life, burrowing into our cave until the arrival of spring. Seasonal affective disorder, known as SAD (no coincidence, right?) is common in winter months, typically beginning in the fall and abating in the spring. Experts are uncertain about the actual causes of this seasonal depression, but suspect that lack of sunlight may interrupt the sleep-wake cycle, affecting other circadian rhythms, and the production of the brain chemical serotonin, which is a powerful mood regulator.

On the other hand, winter can also be a time of restoration, reconnection and preparation for the arrival of spring. Like the flowers and trees, we require nourishment and rest, to replenish our resources, for the next season of our life. Maybe you're ready for spring, as many people often are, or maybe you're feeling a bit rushed with spring's early arrival, like I am.

Either way, this moment, be it in winter or spring, summer or fall, is always the perfect time to listen to what your body, mind, heart and soul is telling you. Maybe you're feeling a bit sluggish waking up from your long winter's nap, or trying to break the winter doldrums by adding a little "spring" into your step.

There's nothing quite like an invigorating and therapeutic massage to clear out the mental and physical cobwebs, shake off the winter blues, and help you "spring" back to life. If you've never had a massage, well, you're in for a treat, and if you've had wonderful massages, well, you know what I mean.

Anytime is a great time for a professional, therapeutic, relaxing, restorative and healing massage. Transitioning from winter into spring is perfect time for a massage, giving your body, and your mind, an opportunity to relax, renew, refresh and reconnect.

In twenty years as a licensed massage therapist and mind-body energy practitioner, it never ceases to amaze me how many people are disconnected and out of touch with their bodies. With the arrival of spring, signaling that summer is around the corner, now is a great time to prepare your body for the active outdoor months ahead.

Massage is often misunderstood, with people thinking it is a luxury, and that it's all about pampering. Nothing could be further from the truth. Not that massage can't be pampering at times, and may still be considered a luxury by some. Therapeutic massage offers many benefits, from pain and stress management to anxiety reduction and improved flexibility in muscles and joints. Doctors often prescribe massage for their patients, finally recognizing the proven multiple therapeutic benefits derived from appropriate, professional massage.

As research continues on the efficacy of massage, more evidence continues to support the effectiveness of appropriate, therapeutic massage on many physical and mental health conditions. Self massage is also another tool that I encourage people to use, as it is a wonderful addition to our self care practice to help ourselves feel better, stay healthy and enjoy life.

Schedule an appointment today with a licensed, professional massage therapist, and spring into abundant health and well being. Your body will love you for it, and your mind will enjoy the peace, calm and quiet, and the opportunity to release the mental chatter and clutter.

Every Body needs to be kneaded! The benefits are endless.

Get "in touch" with you, and enjoy your life to the fullest! You deserve it.

When you feel your best, you give your best, and everyone, including you, benefits!

Be healthy! Be whole! Be happy!

5 Tips for Winter Exercising

by Sharon Liao (courtesy of Spa Magazine)

Cold weather doesn’t have to freeze up your workout routine. Here’s how to combat it and have a successful winter workout.

When the thermostat plunges, your exercise routine can also take a nose dive. “Many people avoid working out in the cold,” says Andrew Wolf, M.Ed. “But that’s because they don’t dress properly.” Working up a sweat in the chilly weather has advantages: It can help beat gym boredom and provide a dose of much-needed sunshine. “Plus, you burn roughly 5 percent more calories,” says Wolf. “Your body has to work harder to keep its internal temperature up, which means you shed more weight.” To help you get outside and enjoy the great outdoors, use these five smart tips.

1. Keep your cool. Many people make the mistake of wearing too much, says Wolf, raising their risk of overheating. Act as if it’s 10 to 15 degrees higher than the actual temperature. “When you step outside, you should feel slightly chilly,” he says. “You’ll warm up as soon as you start exercising.”

2. Layer up.Start with a light moisture wicking base, worn beneath a wool or fleece garment to trap in heat.Top with a breathable water-resistant shell to block out wind, rainand snow.

3. Protect your extremities.Your head, hands and feet are most susceptible to cold and frostbite. Slip on gloves, a neck warmer, a hat and a pair of insulating socks made from wool or neoprene. “Consider buying sneakers a size larger to accommodate thicker socks,” says Wolf. Also apply thick lotion or petroleum jelly on your face and lips to protect against chapped skin.

4. Sip regularly.Although you may not feel as sweaty, you’re just as likely to become dehydrated in the winter. So remember to drink up throughout your workout.

5. Soak your bones.Hike or bike through thousands of acres of trails at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa. And, after a great winter work-out; soak your bones and rejuvenate in the soothing, steamy hot springs.

About the Hiking and Biking Trails at Ojo Caliente
Ojo Caliente Mineral Spin consists of 1,100 acres and is adjoined to thousands of acres of national forest and public land. The diverse landscape ranges from the lush river valley to stunning high desert mesas – all of which contain numerous hiking and biking trails. The more adventurous will enjoyover 15 miles of newly mapped mountain bike trails through the surrounding mesas and to the historic Mica Mines. Or, ride the delightful and more level 2-mile Bosque River Loop that includes a bridge over the Rio Ojo Caliente. For a more leisurely walk, visit our historic Adobe Round Barn.

Integrating Ojo's Sacred Waters, Spa Therapies and Herbs

By Gwynne Ann Unruh LMT, RMTI;
Ojo Lead Spa Therapist and Trainer

The sacred springs of Ojo Caliente have been a gathering place and source of healing for thousands of years. Combining this ancient hydrotherapy of “taking the waters” with the benefits of massage and our spa therapies provides our guests with an overall therapeutic effect that lasts long after their emersion into our ancient waters.

The combination and integration of therapies offered at Ojo impacts the body/mind function, encourages detoxification, and helps to de-stress and add to a person's overall wellness. Massage of the body’s tissues accelerates and increases cell activity and cell oxygenation. This can provide an overall increase in body metabolism, thus improving blood circulation which can help boost the immune system. The buoyancy experienced when soaking in the mineral waters relieves the body of it’s weight, while the heat of the waters relaxes and melts away aches and pains.

Several options are available for guests to experience Ojo’s waters prior to their spa therapy sessions. Soaking in the Arsenic, Soda or Iron Pools; sitting in our wet or dry sauna; time in a private soaking tub, a private soaking pool or an immersion into a ritual bath where our waters are infused with local herbs. You can also choose to "mud up" in the Mud Pool and bake in the sun allowing the mud to soak into your skin. When you rinse off your skin will feel refreshed.

Ojo's spa therapies incorporate the use of hot towels that have been infused with locally wild crafted herbs.

Integrating the heat and minerals of Ojo's sacred waters with herbs and a spa therapy further enhance the overall Ojo health and wellness experience.

Ancient Echoes: East Indian Head Massage

By Gwynne Ann Unruh LMT, RMTI;
Ojo Lead Spa Therapist and Trainer

De-stress and calm your over-active mind. Listen to the voice of Ancient Wisdom echoing through your entire being. This new therapy is based on traditional East Indian Head Massage techniques which are blended with western massage and energy work which includes massage of the back, neck and shoulders, arms, head, and face, finishing off with a luxurious foot massage. Extensive head and neck massage supports hair growth, eases headaches, insomnia, eyestrain and provides relief from aches and pains. You will immediately notice a profound feeling of peace.

Originally part of the ancient Ayurvedic healing system, dating back nearly 4,000 years, the therapy reflects ancient traditions and techniques originating from traditional East Indian culture. Mothers would stroke their daughter's hair to promote its growth and health and then as the daughters grew, they would, in turn work on their mother and grandmother. Now these skills are handed down from mother to daughter and from father to son.

Ancient Echoes works on both a physical and a psychological level in the body. By massaging points on the head, face, shoulders and back, energies become rebalanced and a general feeling of relaxation occurs for the whole body. The face therapy element of the massage is particularly good for reducing signs of aging as it relaxes and softens tense facial muscles which can result in lines and wrinkles.

Come experience this unique new therapy and listen to the sound of the ancient waters of Ojo Caliente echo across time.

Native American Blue Corn Prickly Pear Salt Scrub

This is a wonderful circulation-enhancing therapy. Your skin will feel restored to radiance. It gently and effectively awakens circulation while removing accumulated residues and impurities.

Blue Cornmeal:
An effective, yet gentle, exfoliate. Cornmeal’s natural loofah action is beneficial as an invigorating cleanser, yet gentle enough that it is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin without irritation. It gently removes dead skin giving a deep-down clean without damaging the skin revealing fresh new skin cells. It helps give your skin a healthy scrub, while enhancing the natural ability of the skin to regenerate.  Cornmeal contains large amounts of vitamin E and is a source of Omega 6, essential for normal skin, healthy growth and cellular integrity.

Prickly Pear :
Nourishes skin and is fantastic for soothing sun burn, insect bites'& other skin irritants.

Sea Salt:
Sea salt is very beneficial to the skin. The skin absorbs the sea salts, vitamins and any other substances it comes into contact with. Sea salts contain many minerals beneficial to the body. It is universally accepted that sea salts can have a wonderful effect on circulation and metabolism.

The Cota Tea or "Indian Tea" served with our 50 minute Native American Blue Corn Prickly Pear Salt Scrub is also known to the Navajos as either Navajo Tea or Hopi Tea. This herb has been gathered and prepared by these tribes for many centuries. Historically it has been considered useful for the kidneys and is also used to settle the stomach and purify the blood.

Ojo Face Therapy: A Multifaceted Treatment

By Gwynne Ann Unruh LMT, RMTI;
Ojo Lead Spa Therapist and Trainer

Thousands of years ago the Ancient Chinese, Persians, Romans, Greeks, Asians and Indians recognized the benefits of face massage.  Keeping this in mind we designed all of our Ojo Face Therapies to not only benefit the skin but also the  body, mind, and spirit.

Your Ojo Spa Therapist utilizes extensive massage techniques to apply the SUNDÃRI line of Ayurvedic inspired skin care products that are prepared from the powerful and regenerative properties of plants, herbs, roots, essential oils and floral extracts.

The product application during your session includes relaxing strokes over the entire face, neck and shoulders with circular movements around the temples, cheekbone, mouth, jaw line, and across the forehead. These massage techniques have a calming effect on the nervous system that help reduce stress and tension, calm emotional activity, reduce levels of anxiety and create a feeling of well-being.

Combining massage with the SUNDÃRI productshelps to improve the appearance of your face as well as protect, nourish, hydrate, detoxify, and tone the skin. You may notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles. You’ll look great and feel better on many levels.

It's A Wrap: The Benefits of the Ojo Sacred Journey Aroma Wrap

By Jeannine Dolan, Spa Director

One of my favorite therapies here at the Springs is the Sacred Journey Aroma Wrap, a calming and warm experience that uses the healing powers of local herbs. The local herbs used in the body wrap improve the skin's texture and appearance by removing excess fluids and toxins. The first step in preparation for an aroma wrap is cleaning the skin using an exfoliation process such as dry brushing. After the body is exfoliated, a wrap of warm, herb-soaked towels are placed on the body and a mylar sheet and a heavy wool blanket wraps the body tightly, creating a warm cocoon. A warm hot oil hair treatment with a gentle scalp massage is a special treat making our signature aroma wrap a sensual "Ojo" experience for our guests. For me it is a wonderful time to just get swaddled, close my eyes and drift into a delicious nap.

The Medicine of the Land: The Medicinal Plants of Ojo Caliente

By Jeannine Dolan, Spa Director

For many centuries, the plants and herbs surrounding Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs have been bringing health and healing to the people of the region.  These mountain and desert plants include osha, cherry bark, rose hips, hierba mansa, inmortal, wild yarrow, juniper, just to name a few.

“From honey to bark teas, homecrafted herbal extracts from these native plants address everything from allergy relief and immunity health to curing skin ailments,” explains the Springs’ master herbalist, Tomas Enos.

For instance, cherry bark tea provides relief to sore throats and coughs. Wild yarrow, which grows all over the world, is known for its detoxing properties and ridding bacteria.  Chopped up pine needles boiled in water, either ingested or inhaled from a cotton ball, is an antibacterial for nasal passages and a barrier against infection.  With flu and cold season upon us, these are just some of the tips for staying healthy and vital, and at the Springs, we are happy to share this knowledge with our guests.

A Powerful Ally
There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:

· Decreased anxiety.
·  Enhanced sleep quality.
·  Greater energy.
·  Improved concentration.
·  Increased circulation.
·  Reduced fatigue.

Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.
