ABOUT THE ARTIST:
In order to create a striated, lustrous color blend for my “strata” runners, I hand-dye all of my yarn. Each runner is composed of 4-8 different colors.
I have a vast array of hand-dyed colors in my studio, which allows me to constantly vary the color combinations.
When I seriously began to pursue weaving as a living, I found that I couldn’t find the colors I wanted, so I began dyeing my own yarns Eighteen years later, dyeing is still a major part of my artistic interest. I learned several different methods of dyeing in order to achieve specific, repeatable colors, but I find that I prefer to dye by the seat of my pants. Though I DO have a sense of what color I’m aiming for, I like the surprise of throwing caution to the wind to see what materializes. My focus is on dyeing yarns that have multi-toned colors. These offer a luster to the colors unavailable in solid-dyed yarns, and without the demarcations of hand-painted yarns. I call this method ‘Abrash dyeing’
Pat Dozier has been weaving tapestries since 1993 when she moved to New Mexico to pursue her art. The impressions of objects and forms appear in her work as geometric renditions of shadow forms, color blends and stylized remembrances of pottery shapes and shards.
